It’s easy to get sucked away into the Jalop hive mind. That’s why I’m always happy to find actual NEW car shoppers that discuss what caused them to make certain decisions. The two things we Jalops tend to sweep under the rug (Crash Tests and Market Rankings) are the two things that most consumers use when it comes to doing “research.” Usually if we bring up either, it’s because someone is beating us in an internet argument.

I found this video because today I realized that the A6 is a phenomenally great looking sedan! I never thought about it because all the other Audi sedans and coupes are marketed and mentioned more. But today, I really looked at one and realized that every single time I’ve seen these in the wild my jaw dropped just a little bit. Out of no where I realized this should be my favorite executive sedan. It fits everything I enjoy and prioritize! I’ll have to look into this more...

In my experience, crash test ratings are something that people freak out about when it hits the news.

Then when it comes time for them to buy a car, they have completely forgotten about it.

Well for a car that is from a reputable luxury brand and it costs that kind of money I would not accept anything lower than a “good” rating on all tests, so I kinda agree with the guy on the video, especially if you are buying a commuter car for a family and you want to be safe.

Yeah, especially the small overlap test since it makes it look as if clipping a squirrel will cut the car in half like an axe on a fresh loaf of bread. I know most of the people I talk to just remember whatever safety gimmick a brand is marketing.

I agree too, but only when someone brings it up. If you ask me what the crash test rating was for any vehicles I browse for, I wouldn’t know. Scores are usually the tie breaker or a shopping guide.

Who cares about safety? It makes no sense to buy a car based on what might happen .000001% of the time you’re driving it. Buy a car for the 99.999999%

Luxury cars can be complicated. On one hand, they come from brands famous for engineering prowess, detailed design and occupant safety. On the other hand, who’s going to help the IIHS pay for a small overlap test of a Mercedes-Benz S-class, or a BMW i8, or a Bentley Continental? The market is rather small so there’s no financial incentive for the IIHS to make that investment.

Sometmies you just have to assume that the manufacturer put their best engineering efforts in their flagship products, and sometimes with exotic sports cars you often have to accept that the car at least meets legal safety standards and is “good enough” for limited use.

There are very few structurally unsafe cars sold in North America now. Most will ace the basic NHTSA crash tests, Euro NCAP tests, etc. So it makes sense to use it as just a tie breaker.

I’ll bet most of the “unsafe” cars still sold in the US are exotic low-volume exempt cars that are expensive enough that their niche market wouldn’t be shopping on safety ratings.
